BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Valeria Florescano lives in Mexico City. Her former education as a designer and her belonging to a family of historians has been crucial to her development and work with glass since she first experimented with this material years ago. Her work places art, craft, industry and tradition in parallel, so as to understand the complexity of today’s hybrid culture as we live it.
She works understanding the historical trajectory of an object and its development, its passing from a natural state to an utilitarian condition (a step in which subsistence depends) until the reach of a higher degree of sophistication in usage and/or manufacture.
Seeking to unleash tensions and dialogue around strict notions and concepts assumed as absolutes, like nationality, identity, tradition, art and craft. She is interested in ordinary objects of daily life because simple bodies can tigger off universal sensations.
In 2010 Florescano completed a MFA on sculpture at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas (UNAM). Valeria has shown abroad in the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, the United States, Japan, Finland, Ukraine, Poland and China.
