“Poglos” solo show opened at galeria SiC! BWA in Wrocław, Poland in 2015.
The starting point for the show Reverberation by Valeria Florescano is a multi-layered history . In her work the artist refers both to the heritage of pre-Columbian civilization and the legacy of the modern era initiated by great geographical discoveries. Glass objects have played a key role before the Spanish conquest and changed for ever the face of Mexican material culture. Florescano makes glass the main medium of her artistic activities and combines it symbolically with the motifs specific to the pre-Hispanic concepts regarding the idea of light and darkness, value and worth, austerity and ornamentation. Reverberation is a postcolonial look at the material culture and its meanings. "Word and Flicker" series, 2009. Technique: Lamp worked Borosilicate glass rods, and metal structure. The idea is of the series is to work on the transparency of language: Translation, discrimination (visibility & invisibility) all of this ideas overlap following a visual transparency. This underlines the subjectivity of the written word. When I put in sculptural form texts, the idea is to break the resistance of memory because reading and understanding refraction, light, shadow or reflection lead to more than one sense. Glass changes so much with light that not even a photographs can capture the shimmering rainbows coming out. As we know, a flick is a quick opening and closing to adjust light or vision. This provides us with time to establish a unique communication between interior and exterior, memory and imprint, between presence and abcense. For this series I ended designing a whole alphabet coherent with the concept of “a stream-of-consciousness” and with the mobility of the hot material, so each letter is obtained by bending the glass rod.
